چکیده
Abstract We describe results of a planetary defense exercise conducted during the close approach to Earth by near-Earth asteroid (99942) Apophis 2020 December–2021 March. The community has been conducting observational campaigns since 2017 test operational readiness global capabilities. These community-led exercises were carried out with support NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office and International Asteroid Warning Network. campaign is third in our series exercises. goal this was recover, track, characterize as potential impactor system including observations, hypothetical risk assessment prediction, hazard communication. Based on results, we present lessons learned about ability observe model impactor. Data products derived from astrometric observations available for inclusion almost immediately, allowing real-time updates impact probability calculation possible locations. An early NEOWISE diameter measurement provided significant improvement uncertainty range outcomes. availability different characterization methods such photometry, spectroscopy, radar robustness assess risk.

Directed Energy for Planetary Defense
Directed energy in the form of photons plays an increasingly important role in everyday life, in areas ranging from communications to industrial machining. Recent advances in laser photonics now allow very large-scale modular and scalable systems that are suitable for planetary defense. The fundamental requirements of directed energy planetary defense systems are described here, along with the ...
متن کاملRejuvenating Asteroids during Planetary Flybys: Applications to (99942) Apophis and Other Near-earth Asteroids
Introduction: Laboratory measurements of meteorite reflectance spectra rarely match telescopic observations of asteroid reflectance spectra due to the process (es) of space weathering, which rapidly darken and redden asteroid surface on million-year timescales [e.g. 1-2]. While most main belt asteroids appear weathered, a fraction of near-Earth asteroids (the Q-types) appear unweathered – possi...
متن کاملEffective Planetary Defense using Directed Energy DE-STARLITE
We show that Directed Energy (DE) systems offer the potential for true planetary defense from small to km class threats. Directed energy has evolved dramatically recently and is on an extremely rapid ascent technologically. It is now feasible to consider DE systems for threats from asteroids and comets. DE-STAR (Directed Energy System for Targeting of Asteroids and exploRation) is a phased-arra...

متن کاملApophis Encounter 2029 : Differential Algebra and Taylor Model Approaches
Orbit uncertainty propagation usually requires linearized propagation models [1–3] or full nonlinear Monte Carlo simulations [4]. The linear assumption simplifies the problem, but fails to characterize trajectory statistics when the system is highly nonlinear or when mapped over a long time period. On the other hand, Monte Carlo simulations provide true trajectory statistics, but are computatio...
